Methods of Astronomical Research, 2nd Edition
Published by the Zagreb Observatory – Zagreb Astronomical Association and the Astronomical-Astronautical Society “Zagreb,” the second edition of the book Methods of Astronomical Research by Dragan Roša has been printed. The book provides an overview of astronomical research methods, from classical historical approaches to modern astrophysical techniques. It consists of three chapters:
- History of Astronomical Knowledge: Focuses on the understanding of the universe’s structure and the laws governing its phenomena.
- The Appearance of the Universe: Explores how the universe appears to observers without sophisticated astronomical equipment.
- Astrophysical Research Methods: Describes modern astrophysical techniques based on contemporary knowledge and diverse observational methods.
The text is generally tailored to high school-level knowledge but occasionally exceeds it intentionally, as it is also aimed at motivated students with a passion for astronomy. Many sections are written in a narrative style, making them accessible to a broader audience. The book is suitable for teachers of elective astronomy courses, extracurricular activity leaders, and as a supplementary resource for natural sciences and mathematics classes. It also serves as an introductory text for university students in natural sciences and mathematics, as well as a handbook for professionals requiring foundational astronomical and astrophysical knowledge.
Each chapter includes questions and exercises, totaling around 250. The book features approximately 300 illustrations and diagrams.
The second edition has been expanded and updated with significant astronomical discoveries from recent years. Errors from the first edition have been corrected, and many space photographs have been replaced with images generously provided by renowned astrophotographers, to whom the authors express special thanks.
